Sidebar & Navigation System

Your work in TaxLayer revolves around three things: clients, documents, and compliance. The navigation is designed to make those easy to reach without clutter or confusion. The sidebar, breadcrumbs, and smart routing make sure you always know where you are and how to get back.

The sidebar is your anchor — it’s always on the left, minimal and icon-only to keep your workspace clean.

Here’s how it’s structured:

  • Top: TaxLayer logo (click it anytime to go back to the Dashboard).

  • Middle: Navigation icons for your core features:

    • 👥 Clients & Vendors

    • 📄 Documents (if your plan allows)

    • 🔀 Workflows

    • 💬 Chat (AI assistant)

    • 🧠 Knowledge (train your Brain AI)

  • Bottom: Settings ⚙️, your avatar, and Sign Out.

When you’re working deep inside a client, batch, or workflow, breadcrumbs appear at the top of the page.

Example: Clients > Joe Bloggs Ltd > Batches > September Upload

  • Every level is clickable (except the last one).

  • They’re your quick way to jump back without hitting “back” repeatedly.

👉 Think of breadcrumbs as your trail of breadcrumbs through the forest of compliance tasks.

🔐 Permissions & Access

Not every section appears for every user. What you see depends on your subscription tier (e.g. Documents, Validator, Monitoring are gated).

If you don’t see something, it’s either not part of your plan or hasn’t been enabled for your account yet.

👉 No greyed-out “locked” items — you simply won’t see what’s not available.

  • Click the logo to return to Dashboard from anywhere.

  • Use breadcrumbs to stay oriented and jump back quickly.

  • Bookmark deep links — every client, workflow, or batch has its own URL.

  • Hover for labels if you’re unsure what an icon means.

  • Open in new tabs when switching between clients or workflows.

🛠 Troubleshooting Navigation

  • Missing icons? Likely a plan/permissions issue. Check Plans & Billing in Settings.

  • Redirected to login? Your session expired — just sign back in.

  • Sidebar not loading? Refresh the page or clear cache.

  • Breadcrumbs look odd? Some pages don’t need them (e.g. Dashboard).

💡 Pro Tips for Power Users

  • Use browser back/forward buttons — routing remembers your place.

  • Keep multiple tabs open for different clients.

  • Settings ⚙️ is always accessible at the bottom of the sidebar, no matter where you are.

  • Learn the URL patterns (e.g. /clients/{id}) to jump straight to what you need.
